"Well spring is coming soon and I suppose it's about time to get
spring fever. I want you boys to send me a nice bunch of hepaticas
and other early spring flowers as soon as they begin to bloom.
Please do. I've never been away from home in the spring yet and
I want just a little bit of spring in here too."
It seemed only natural to include wildflowers in our cookbook . . .
The above quote was written by Elizabeth on March 9, 1925 in a letter to her parents, brothers and sister. She was sixteen at the time and living in the city. Her mother would often send wildflowers and flowers from the garden, wrapping the stems in moss to keep them fresh during shipping. These "reminders of home" helped lift Elizabeth's spirits. There were many lonely days for this young girl who had left home to earn money to send back to her family. She was a devoted daughter who only kept enough to go to the matinee or buy a new dress every so often. The family and home she dreamed of seemed like it was a world away.
Elizabeth has had a passion for flowers all of her life. Her passion has been passed down to her children and grandchildren. We all love flowers! She has countless memories of taking a walk in the woods or in the fields in search of wildflowers. She always had beautiful gardens filled with old fashioned flowers like larkspur, love-in-a-mist, cosmos, baby's breath, poppies, pin cushion flowers, lilacs, daisies, rose geranium, lavender, shasta daisies and roses. In the spring and summertime Elizabeth would pick a beautiful bouquet of garden flowers and display them in an antique vase on her dining room table.
