Elizabeth Rose von Hohen seen here in the 1950s, preparing Thanksgiving dinner for her growing family. As you can see, she was happiest while in the kitchen cooking and baking. How lucky we are that she wanted to share her special comfort food recipes! Her desire is to not only share her recipes with you, but for you to feel joyful, just as she did, when you are in your kitchen.

Elizabeth's vast experience spans a lifetime. As a child at the age of nine in 1918, she began cooking  for her family, standing on a wooden crate in front of the old coal/wood stove. Her German-Hungarian heritage is reflected in a handful of the easy recipes she shares in Grandmother's Cookbook, but it is mainly a country homestyle cookbook.
Elizabeth had a Bohemian godmother, her Aunt Rose, who had been a cook for an aristocratic family in Vienna. Like all women of her time, Aunt Rose loved telling stories of her experiences in Austria. She was a great influence on Elizabeth's interest in baking, as she shared her secrets of making pastries and cakes.

At the young age of fifteen Elizabeth traveled far from the safety and security of “home” to work for a wealthy family in Philadelphia. She was eager to learn everything her boss, Mrs. Strauss, had to teach her. It was here where her style developed a gourmet flair. She continued to cook and “try new things” up until about the age of ninety. In the forward of Grandmother's Cookbook she writes, “My hope is that all these special old fashioned recipes will not become a lost art.”

A few years back a customer called wanting to purchase five additional cookbooks to give as gifts to her daughters and daughters-in-law. Her enthusiasm for Grandmother's Cookbook was overwhelming! Because of Elizabeth's personal writing style, she and her family felt as if they knew her. She said while they were eating dinners made from her recipes they would talk about Elizabeth like she was a member of their own family! She said they loved her as if she WAS a member of their family. This was incredible and Elizabeth was so pleased!
